Thomas Hellmut Schindler, M.D., is Director of Cardiovascular Nuclear Medicine and Associate Professor PER at Johns Hopkins Universiy, Medical School, Baltimore, MD, USA. Dr. Schindler has an international reputation in the field of Cardiovascular Imaging with focus on Nuclear Cardiology and cardiac PET/CT imaging. He received his medical degree (1995) and dissertation (doctor medecinae, 1996) from the University of Leipzig, Germany ("magna cum laude"). He is board certified for Internal Medicine, Cardiology and Nuclear Cardiology. From 2002 to 2006, Thomas Schindler completed a postdoctoral fellowship in cardiac PET imaging at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles, Mentor Dr. Heinrich R. Schelbert, MD, PhD). Subsequently, from 2006-2013, Thomas Schindler had joined the faculty of the University of Geneva (Switzerland), initially as assistant professor and clinical attending primarily in charge for Cardiovascular Imaging but also for General Clinical Cardiology, while being promoted academically to "Privat-Docent" in 2009 and clinically to Deputy Head Physician in Cardiology 2010 in view of his clinical services and training of residents and fellows. He has authored over 71 peer review publications with an impact factor exceeding 287 mainly as first and senior author, and numerous book chapters. He has been member of the board of directors (BOD) of the cardiovascular committees (CVC) of the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI), Cardiovascular Section (CC) of the European Society of Nuclear Medicine (EANM), and the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) for several years and he is involved in numerous conferences as organizer and invited speaker. Thomas Schindler established Nuclear Cardiology and cardiac PET centers at the Universities of Freiburg (Germany), Basel and Geneva (Switzerland). while performing major contributions in the identification and characterization of coronary circulatory dysfunction, as functional precursor of CAD, by means of PET flow studies during his postdoctoral fellowship at UCLA and subsequently in Geneva (Switzerland). This research provides a frame work for designing treatments strategies for modifying and/or reducing coronary risk. His overall vision is to develop cardiac SPECT- and PET-CT and other cardiac imaging modalities in the clinical routine for the assessment of early and late stages of CAD with its diagnostic and prognostic implications, while pursuing the advancement of molecular imaging in cardiac disease.
